Beginners
I recommend that you keep a daily log of your practice routines. Be sure to specify what you practice and how long you practice your warm up, scales, etc. As a beginner, your daily practice time should equal the time of each of your lessons.
Warm Up Exercises
Start your practice session with a warm up every time. Warm ups are long tones. As a beginner, it is a good idea to use a tuner to make sure you are playing every note in tune. If you have a metronome, set your metronome on quarter note = 60 so that you can keep track of the length of your notes. If you don't have a metronome, hold out every note in your range for as long as you can.
A good range for a beginner would be a two octave range from low D to high D. You might find a fingering chart helpful for this exercise. If you need a fingering chart, I highly recommend
I suggest starting on a comfortable note like middle F and working down chromatically (i.e. half steps) to low D, then jump directly to high D and work your way back down chromatically to middle F.
